Gettysburg College is a private, four-year liberal arts college in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The school is located across from the famous battlefield where the Gettysburg Battle occurred. Gettysburg College was established in 1832. The college was first named Pennsylvania College, when it was founded by S. S. Schmucker. During the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Hall, better known as Old Dorm, was used as a field hospital and a signal station. Due to its geographic position, the hall was used by both Union and Confederate troops during the battle to do surgery and work on their signal.
The college is located on 200 acres of land campus across from the Gettysburg National Military Park.Pennsylvania is 36 miles from Harrisburg, 55 miles from Baltimore, 80 miles from Washington, D.C., and 212 miles from New York City. Gettysburg College has about 2,700 students, with roughly the same numbers of men and women. Gettysburg students also come from 43 states and 32 different countries. The school’s colors are orange and blue and the team nicknames are the Bullets.
The main campus of the college is divided by Pennsylvania Hall. The north half features Eddie Plank Gym, Masters Hall, the Musselman Library, the College Dining Center, Briedenbaugh Hall, and various other dorms and student groups. A part of this campus is known as "Stine Lake". But it isn't a lake but a quad found just across from the library. It was called a lake because of the frequent flooding that used to occur there. It no longer floods today, but the nickname stuck to the location. The south half of the campus has McKnight Hall, Glatfelter Hall, Schmucker Hall, Kline Theater, as well as other fraternities. Since most students (96%) live on campus, almost all of the extra land is used for student housing.
